Comments: I made this tie with the mistake of using silk that was not heavy enough for the seven fold construction. It still looks nice, but feels too light and does not drape as well because of it. I also tried making the slip stitch stitches wider thinking that it would make it drape better. But this was not the case. This tie bunched up the most, partly because of the weight of the silk, but mostly because I did not stretch out the tie before making the final knot on the slip stitch. |
Comments: After I finally found a place that sold tie interlining, I reopened this tie (again) and put the interlining inside. Now the weight is perfect and drapes beautifully. |
![]() Comments: I picked an ugly pattern. As my first six fold tie made with my pattern, there are two flaws with it. First, the silk is too heavy and makes the tie just a little too stiff and bulky. The other flaw is in the construction inside the folds. When attaching the facing, the edges on the sides did not overlap in the proper place. The result is that inside the inner most fold, you can see a section of the silk from the base silk piece. |
Comments: After discovering the flaw from the thick six-fold, I made an alteration to the pattern and resolved this problem but created another. I did not know how properly sew the side corner where the base meets the facing. The result was an awkwardly shaped corner that is not parallel with the edge of the tie. But it is in the innermost fold. Another "mistake" was choosing a silk that is a pain to work with charmeuse. The silk drapes very well and is very smooth, but it stretches and is very slippery. Never again will I use this fabric. |
Comments: I used charmeuse again.. Again, it was a big pain in the butt to sew. But I felt compelled to buy something when I went to the fashion district in LA. And just to let you know, they don't have silk designed for ties. Asides from the stretching problems, I figured out how to sew the side corner of the facing onto the base section. |
![]() Comments: This is my finest six fold so far in terms of construction quality. The picture looks a little off because it puffs outwards a little when you roll it up. The corners came out nice and sharp and everything lined up almost perfectly. The one oversight that I made was lining up the pattern before cutting it. The dots at the tip of the tie are not centered at all. |
Comments: I messed up on cutting the silk this time. So the folds didn't line up perfectly in the back. But none the less, it still makes for a nice looking tie as long as you don't open it up. This time, the silk was cut to make an unlined six fold tie. It doesn't feel as stiff as the dotted tie, but is heavy enough without the interlining. I also tried stitching it such that the slip stitches only touch the two layers furthest from the front. Maybe this will keep the tie from bunching up. |
